What is Yong Shen?
A Bazi chart is composed of the Five Elements. Very few people are born with perfect elemental balance. Most charts suffer from extreme excess or deficiency of certain elements, leading to life's obstacles. "Yong Shen" (the Useful God) is the critical element that cures the "disease" of the chart. For example, if a chart is overwhelmingly cold and flooded with water, Bing Fire (the Sun) becomes the Useful God to bring warmth. If wood is overgrown, Geng Metal is needed to prune it.

Q.Is the Useful God simply the element my chart is missing?
This is the biggest amateur misconception! "Missing" does not mean "Needed". For example, if your chart is a raging inferno (a Special Dominant chart) with zero water, adding a few drops of water will only cause an explosion. The true Useful God is about energetic balance or following the dominant flow, not blindly filling missing gaps.
